ARE is the expected standard for children to produce. There is a criteria which independent writing is marked against to ensure consistency across schools. (to be uploaded) . This criteria includes such things as using full stops and capital letters (an expected year 2 standard),  using speech punctuation correctly most of the time (year 4 expected standard), to use verb tenses consistently and correctly (Year 6).  Children need to achieve the expected statements in order to reach their age expectations.
